Notes: The imprecatory stanzas by James Hart Brumm are not intended to represent any particular psalm; rather, they reflect the tone of Pss. 58-60 (and many others like them), with honest expressions of hurt, anger, bitterness, and desires for vengeance. The strident nature of the stanzas is matched by the tonal dissonance of the musical setting. This dissonance is most pronounced in the accompaniment, allowing the melody to be straightforward and accessible for congregational singing. However, care should be taken when choosing to sing this setting. Congregations are not accustomed to singing stinging words like this, and without intentional preparation they may be bewildered or resentful. The first half of each stanza presents the most biting text and should be sung with vehemence. The second half takes a step back; it is more pleading. If the congregation cannot sing the first half of the stanza with integrity, a representative solo voice may sing this on behalf of the congregation or particular people who need to cry out to God in this way. The congregation can then join in singing the petitions in the second half of each stanza. Alternate tune: EBENEZER
