Notes: The refrain is particularly appropriate for use in the Easter Vigil service (where it is set in dialogue with Rom. 6:3-11), or in any situation that celebrates or anticipates freedom from slavery. This may be interpreted literally (e.g., remembering Israel’s deliverance from bondage in Egypt or modern-day deliverances from oppression or servitude) or figuratively (e.g., liberation from death and sin). When using as a refrain within the psalm, sing only the first half, without the repeat. A leader calls (see top line) and all respond. At the conclusion, sing the entire song several times. As a second stanza the congregation may sing “Jesus is coming . . . ,” a theme particularly appropriate at Advent. Though djembe and hand clapping can be added, the song works equally well completely unaccompanied. Alternate refrain 2 includes a vocal vamp which may be used with Scripture reading. The number of repeats can be adapted to fit the timing of the Scripture reading.
