143. The Beacon of the Cross

1 Sometimes the mists of doubt and sin
Will gather round the way we tread,
Until such darkness shuts us in;
We cannot see the path ahead.

Chorus:
O sinner, look to Calv'ry's hill,
The cross of Christ is standing still-
Will stand forever more, to show
Earth's wand'ring children where to go.

2 When groping blindly thro' the dark,
"Lord, we have lost the way," we cry;
Then lo! the heav'nward path to mark,
His cross stands out against the sky. [Chorus]

3 O beacon, burn forevermore
Above sin's dang'rous reef and shoal,-
Flash earth-ward from the heav'nly shore-
The landmark of the Christian soul. [Chorus]
