The King of Love My Shepherd Is (Psalm 23)

Full Text

1 The King of love my Shepherd is,
whose goodness faileth never;
I nothing lack if I am his
and he is mine forever.

2 Where streams of living water flow
my ransomed soul he leadeth,
and where the verdant pastures grow,
with food celestial feedeth.

3 Perverse and foolish oft I strayed,
but yet in love he sought me,
and on his shoulder gently laid,
and home, rejoicing, brought me.

4 In death's dark vale I fear no ill
with thee, dear Lord, beside me;
thy rod and staff my comfort still,
thy cross before to guide me.

5 Thou spreadst a table in my sight;
thy unction grace bestoweth;
and, oh, what transport of delight
from thy pure chalice floweth!

6 And so through all the length of days
thy goodness faileth never;
Good Shepherd, may I sing thy praise
within thy house forever.

Additional Prayers

A Prayer of Thanks for God’s Providence
To you, generous God, we lift our hearts with thanks that you are never farther away than the reach of our need or our prayer. You have often saved us from our own sin and folly. You have been present to us in times of futility. You have loved us when we were unlovable. God of the spread table and standing invitation, we give you thanks for your goodness through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The King of Love My Shepherd Is (Psalm 23)

Hymn Story/Background

This beloved setting of Psalm 23 comes from the pen of Henry Baker, who was the chief editor of Hymns Ancient and Modern (1868)Of the 33 texts and 4 tunes he contributed to that landmark English hymnal, this one is what he is most remembered for.
The tune is named after the Irish Saint Columba (521-597) who is remembered as bringing Christianity to Scotland, where he and his companions founded an abbey on the island of Iona, the sight of the current Iona Community.  The current form of the tune was first set to “The King of Love My Shepherd Is” in the English Hymnal (1906).
