49. The Christian Soldier

1 Attention! Christian soldier! thou warrior of the King!
With joyfulness come forward and your whole armor bring,
The foe we fight is dang’rous, alert and in the field,
Not easily he’s conquered, to force alone he’ll yield.
The helmet of salvation, for its protecting care
Put on thy head for safety the foe will smite thee there,
Of righteousness the breastplate, upon thee firmly bind
That no well aiméd arrow the vital heart may find.

2 For sandals preparation of calming gospel peace,
The soul from fear and trembling and terror to release,
Of faith put on the shield to ward off, the blows and darts,
That Satan’s soldiers fiercely do hurl at Christian hearts.
For sword put on the Spirit’s all blessed word of God,
And manfully do wield it at our Commander’s nod,
For girdle faith sufficeth, our armor will complete,
And make Christ’s soldiers ready the foeman to defeat.

3 The hosts of sin are mighty and stand in bold array;
But, onward, Christian soldier, halt not in dread dismay;
For Christ our valiant Captain is armed with heaven’s might,
And He will give us power to put the foe to flight.
Then forward to the conflict! the cross our standard be!
With Christ our Captain leading, we’ll win the victory!
March on till every stronghold now held in Satan’s trust,
Is overwhelmed in battle and humbled in the dust.
