340. I Have Borne the Lark's Swift Pinions

1 I have borne the lark's swift pinions,
I have sung his joyous songs;
High above earth's vain dominions,
Paradise to me belongs.

2 I have felt the home-ties clinging
Only where glad songs abound;
Echoes from my childhood's singing
Ever in my soul resound.

3 Though the tears my eyes be blinding,
Can I see the heavens beam.
Soon the way I shall be finding
To my childhood's lofty dream.

4 When with eyes and heart uplifted
Through the winter night I go,
I shall see, beyond snow-drifted
Death-lands, glorious flowers grow.
