54. The Bible Mother Loved

1 Silent the night and weary the heart,
Sin in its blackness had clothed ev’ry part,
When in one last, one gentle request,
Sadly a soul longed for rest, sweet rest.

Chorus:
Bring me the Bible mother loved,
Turn thro’ its pages worn and old,
Read to me once more of Mercy’s open door
Lest I should be barred outside the fold.

2 Tearstained the cheeks of those by his side
Waiting to see him cross over death’s tide,
Silent they watch while pulse beat is slow,
Yet he’s repeating in accents low: [Chorus]

3 Friends had oft pray’d that e’er ‘twas too late
This soul might enter within Mercy’s gate
And though he sinks there’s hope in his plea,
Bring mother’s Bible and read to me. [Chorus]

4 Angels await the tidings to bear,
Kindly they carry to Heaven his prayer,
Quickly return with answered request,
Saying, “Come home weary one and rest.” [Chorus]
